Windows 10 Nagging Increases again!
Jan. 11th, 2016 03:49 pmReally not very surprising I guess, but 'Get Windows 10' Turns Itself On and Nags Win 7 and 8.1 Users Twice a Day.
Essentially if you have been rewriting registry settings to stop the windows 10 nag on your 7/8 boxes, the new update now looks for manually edited register settings and "corrects" them, then proceeds to nag you if you're eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade - after downloading the 6gig update.
Seriously, with how hard Microsoft is trying to obsolete their older software, I can't help but wonder exactly what benefits they're REALLY getting out of all the datamining they do on Windows 10.
In related news, I've been testing out Linux installs. The Ubuntu 14 upgrade from 12 didn't work very well - functional but some errors. I'm sure things would work fine with a pure 14 install instead of an upgrade, but I've also got a few other distros downloaded and burned to DVD to try out.

Date: 2016-01-11 11:05 pm (UTC)Related to that, any games or whatever that come out in the meantime that "require" Windows 10 to play are games that I will be able to safely ignore, the same way that I already ignore games that are exclusive to consoles (especially if said console is the X-bone), no matter how amazingly orgasmic such games may otherwise be. *shrug* It's their loss, not mine. I'm already just on the razor's edge of abandoning modern video gaming entirely anyway (and for all practical purposes it is something I've pretty much already done), and shit like this is definitely pushing me ever closer to that edge for good. You know, given that being able to play some game or another would more or less be the only reason I'd ever even remotely feel the urge to upgrade to Win10 to begin with, and at this point, not even that would be enough to overcome my active dislike for Microsoft's duplicitous bullshit.
If and when I ever get around to doing a complete overhaul of the current computer (in other words, buying a new computer) in several years or however long it will be, I'm definitely going to consider setting aside some harddrive space to try out Linux on my own. What I used of Linux in my old job didn't impress me too awfully much, however (though it's better than MacOS, at least, I'll give it that much).

Date: 2016-01-12 12:10 am (UTC)Guess I'll just have to start manually doing a "Check for Updates" on my own from time to time now, rather than, yes, blindly trusting in Microsoft, even to that minor extent.
