Gamez Post (But not a rant)
Jun. 4th, 2010 06:49 amBelieve it or not, I'm still writing here and there about that brewing rant I mentioned in the last entry. Doesn't mean it's excessively long (yet) as days go by without me having time to look at it, but it it's already a good 9k. I might just end up posting it on my website and linking it here or something.
Anyway, in game news, I've completed Grandia 3 for the Games Complete List. I had completed it years ago, but that was before the start of the list. To add it, I must complete the game after I started it - so I did.
The game's longer than I remember, to be sure. But it still feels rather short. The dungeons themselves take a good hour or two each to complete. I'd have to sit down and think about which of the grandia games I like most. Grandia 3 is by far the prettiest of the bunch. There are a LOT of pre-rendered cutscenes. You wouldn't be wrong to think of it more as a somewhat interactive movie where the goal is to go from cutscene to cutscene. With bosses and monsters here and there.
The last boss has 128,000 hp. That seems like a lot until you consider if you have your characters properly buffed, they can each deal 2-4k damage per round. The problem is with surviving given the boss has a variety of attacks and it attacks quite quickly. It's command icon will spin around the circle twice or more in the time it'll take your own characters to go around. I can think of ways to better prep my characters for that battle all the same when I think back on it.
Grandia II I tended to like more for the actual fighting and bosses. Grandia Extreme I think was probably the most addictive however, with it's time sapping mana egg fusion functions. I made some pretty potent eggs to help cast spells. Grandia 3 has mana egg fusion as well, but it is seriously cut down compared to Extreme. All you can do is mix some eggs to get new eggs. In Extreme mana is held in the eggs, not the players. The spells are also held directly in the eggs. So mixing eggs got you new eggs, but also would increase the total mana in the new egg and potentially alter the characteristics of the spells it contains. Wider area of effect, stronger damage, knockback/cancel effects, faster cast time, etc. I made some awesome eggs back in 2004. ;)
Also, Disgaea (PSP) is technically "finished" but I'll be playing it for another few months it seems. Every time you complete the story you can play through it again - keeping your previous equipment, levels, and characters. Obviously it gets easier, but there are a few different endings, plus the PSP version has an extra Etna storyline which I'm currently going through. Each time I go through it I spend time buffing up character levels and equipment and bribing the Dark Assembly Senators so that they'll eventually approve the opening of the bonus gates/stories/whatever. Seems every time I try to get them to open them up the only senators that appear to vote on the decision are the ones that loathe me. It's all good tho. As when they refuse to pass a motion, you have the option to "Persuade by force". I'll eventually have a high enough level to kick the crap out of them and open the extra gates regardless. *grin*
Next up, I'll be starting in on the last of the original .hack games, vol 4 Quarantine. Not going to start that until Saturday at the earliest. For the handhelds, I'm not sure what game will be next but I have time to ponder it.
