I know a couple of you that read my LJ are big on the current gen games. I won't be stepping up to that platform until next year most likely, but I'd like to ask in advance to get an idea of a few things.

1. Which games can you think of that have annoying buggy shit fresh on the disc. Meaning, which games do you know on the PS3/360/Wii that tend to need online patching. The main one I can remember offhand is Fable II.

2. Which ones have you played that aren't buggy as hell, but have zero day DLC or intrusive/annoying ways of advertising DLC in-game (Dragon Age: Origins I believe is one like this.) or "free" one-time (ie: original consumer only) DLC downloads.

Yeah, I'm probably going to be trying to avoid both types of games, especially the one-time only bullshit since I'll likely be buying used most of the time except for a couple of specific times.

Aside from Fable 2 and DA:O, let's see...

Star Wars Force Unleashed (360) was pretty buggy. Had it lock a couple times, and ran into the bug that prevented me from getting one of the achievements. They've probably patched that by now, though.

Fallout 3 had a few crappy gameplay issues that I would consider to be bugs. If entire towns can be killed and quests lost because of enemies that spawn too close to the town, especially if you, the player aren't aware of it until hours later, then yeah, I think that's a bug. Some people disagree and consider that to be a "feature." Those people are, of course, wrong.

Most recently, Silent Hill Shattered Memories (Wii) has a few bugs that forced me to reload a save. One was falling through the world into the black ether. It being a SH game, at first I thought it was some kind of mind screw, but no. The other is a bit of a spoiler, but whatever: when in the car under water, do NOT touch the radio dial until it lights up, or it'll glitch and prevent the game from continuing.

As for intrusive in-game advertising for DLC, DA:O is the only one I've played (though I already had the DLC installed, and thus didn't see it myself). Can't think of any others, but I'm sure there are some. Oh, Mass Effect 2 has a code for DLC that came with DA:O that I'm not sure you can get anywhere else.

I can't think of any others offhand, at least at the moment.

Mass Effect 2 has zero-day DLC as well. Has another setup that drives me nuts as well - exclusive preordering. That is, special exclusive DLC content IF you pre-order from a specific vendor. Activision is currently pretty bad for this - for their Bakugan game on the DS I saw at least 3 different Limited Editions. physically the same, but several have different download codes for extra characters. I've seen them do it with several of their other games so I'm probably going to just put all Activision titles on the ban list.

Mass Effect 2's zero-day DLC annoys me as well. If I read it right, those who buy it new will have a one time only use to register for access to a free DLC archive of some sort. You can still buy the content separately if you have it used, but no thanks.

I'm not strictly against the idea of extra content being added after the fact, but I don't trust any of the companies involved to keep this content available forever or to make it easy to backup your own DLC independantly to make sure what YOU bought can stay around forever regardless of what they do. And so, for the vast majority of cases, they ain't getting a penny out of me.
