One of the reasons they do it is because the people that design elaborate DRM schemes pitch it as necessary to the top brass of companies, and if the top brass ignore it, they potentially tell it to the investors/shareholders who would then demand to know why the top brass isn't doing "everything" in their power to maximize profits which this DRM supposely does. (shareholders have been known to sue the top brass at times when they DON'T take the total dickish route based on false promises.) There are other reasons as well. I'm sure fear is one of them.
