The Newest Dark Room Trap
Jun. 3rd, 2011 06:32 amI turned on (took out the torches) the newest Dark Room trap earlier this week. Unlike the previous attempts which were horizontally positioned, this one was a vertical tower of sorts - I figgered "Well, I have a mountain here...."
And thus that mountain became the newest dark trap. The trap itself is a central tower with spawning beds that spread out in 4 directions. I also add a central floor bed in the center, slightly offset to allow mobs to fall off it onto the normal beds. The setup basically encourages mobs to go down. Either the soft way.... or the hard way. Once they get to the bottom floor they land in the differently positioned beds and water currents and funneled to the center 4x4 pit that'll drop them another 20-30 blocks.
This will hurt them, but due to the water flow at the bottom, it doesn't seem to kill them. If I read about the fence trick I might have considered that but since there's still a ways for mobs to go horizontally, it's not important.
The horizontal currents that push the mobs from here are to move them closer to where I wanted to put the collection plate. You see, I found a zombie spawner not too far away from the bottom of the pit.
As such, I trapped the zombie spawner with a drown trap and set the collection plate so that it'll be close enough to trigger the zombie spawner into generating a constant string of zombies. This adds extra feathers into the collection plate, and ensures there's always a supply of items even when night falls and the main dark room loses power (as mobs will spawn out of the dark room more readily with the sun down and the entire surface being spawnable)
I've been hanging around the spawner for a while now, a bit in the morning before bed. And it's already proven itself to be a pretty big success. I've seen mob traps work better in youtube videos, but this one is doing nicely for now. For instance, it definitely works better at getting string from spiders. I've already gotten almost 3 times the string compared to what I've gotten from the Desert Trap. And nothing gets past the lava blade on this one. >:)
Next goals will include tinkering with the spider spawner I found over by the Mob Grinder base. I've got an idea for a reverse drown trap that might work for spiders. Additionally I'll be doing a quick fix on the mob grinder itself. I see one of the things that seriously messed up it's efficiency for item drops.
