Further Minecrafting
Apr. 30th, 2011 03:07 pmIn a nutshell, two attempts at doing a Dark Room trap failed for various reasons. Granted I just never bothered turning on the first one because I saw issues with it. The second one failed spectacularly. I suspect I built it too close to bedrock, and the couple of mobs that did happen to fall into it managed to get stuck in the final canal. Oh well, live and learn.
The third attempt tried using the layered approach from this tutorial. It is a partial success.
I know mobs are being grinded properly and I've collected a handful of items, but mob spawns aren't nearly as high as I would expect. The reason for this is likely because I haven't finished preparations before turning it on. (Darkening the rooms.)
This thing works because you're generating specific platforms of darkness to encourage mob spawns, then use a water network to shuffle the mobs to their death when they stumble into it.
Having dark areas within spawn range mean spawns will have a more likely chance of happening outside the trap instead of inside. So I have to go around and light up the surface (as at night, the entire surface is ideal spawning ground) and go light up all the caves I can find under the ground within range.
And there are some pretty big caves near it. In fact I dug the dark rooms like 1 block away from the edge of one massive cave complex. (Which incidently has a zombie spawner on the other side in one case. Further down that cavern I found a spider spawner. Both are deactivated but not trapped yet.)
Additionally I only have 5 floors for the mobs to spawn in. I got lazy with not wanting to dig it any further down. I saved space to dig out two more rooms between the current bottom dark room and the grinder floor. And I can always build layers on top of all of them. More floors mean more room for mobs to spawn and fall in.
Also built a few other bases and did more caving beyond the ones around the grinder. Getting better at not panicking as soon as I see a mob in a cave. :P
