Ok, so the Metal Gear Online beta launched yesterday. And it's already been suspended.
Konami didn't say why, but apparently Kotaku sheds some light on it being related to a possible exploit that let players gain the in-game currency (which is normally only purchased with real money, you know, to help hide from the user how much money they're wasting.) for free.
Do you see the problem with this?
If your thought was to say "Well of course! They should have been able to find something like that before launching the mmo!" then you totally missed the real problem.
This is not Metal Gear Online. This is the BETA OF Metal Gear Online. A live beta is suppose to be focused on finding and eliminating bugs in the game, something that can be easier to track down when you have a large number of people testing damned near everything. However it was taken offline because of a problem WITH THE BETA'S MICROTRANSACTIONS.
This game is not out of beta, and Konami is ALREADY milking the users with it. All they had to do is make sure people understood the character base would be deleted prior to the official launch.
Also, commenters on PC Gamer, some of them at least, were complaining about this and how the entire game industry "appears" to be going down the toilet lately.
I agree that it is going down the toilet. I predicted it would. But ultimately the entire fault lies on gamers that continue to suck down what ever's coming out of the pipe. So all the players of the Metal Gear Online beta are doing, if they buy even a single coin, is justifying this shit. And with that you can expect it to spread to every other mmo BETA that follows.

Date: 2016-01-15 05:48 am (UTC)Oh, and have you heard the rumors that Konami has apparently been dealing with/been taken over by/become a front company for the Yakuza lately? As in, that's possibly why they've recently been mostly abandoning video games altogether and getting into pachinko instead, among other things? I hadn't heard that before, as far as I can recall, even though the rumors have apparently been around for at least as long as the time period during which Konami really started turning into the total shithole of a company that it is these days. At this point, it certainly wouldn't surprise me at all if the rumors prove to be true.
And yeah, more generally speaking, to hell with anyone who buys horseshit microtransactions like this in any game, beta or not. That is indeed exactly why this shit is even able to happen in the first place, as both of us have been saying for goddamn years now. The game companies know that they can not only get away with it, but make mad bank with it, because there are far too many stupid, gullible, weak-willed assholes out there who get suckered in by this kind of shit, or else who are just too apathetic and blasé to care about how it adversely affects the industry as a whole, as long as they get theirs, in the moment. It has been that way from the very beginnings of DLC/microtransactions, and it has only been getting ever more worse as the companies continue to test the waters to see just how much more they can get by with before reaching any kind of breaking point (and so far, it seems like the sky is still the limit, no matter how often guys like us may rant about this shit). If idiots didn't continue to buy this kind of shit, the companies wouldn't be able to sell the shit. It really, truly is as frustratingly, enragingly simple as that, and the fact that so many morons out there apparently don't get it (or else just don't care) is just mind-boggling to me.
