You know, I look at this and about the only thing I can think of is "So... Microsoft's finally starting to downgrade Mojang before the inevitable absorption of Minecraft proper."

They mention they can't afford to sustain scrolls in the article for the reason for the downgrade/closing but at the same time they're rolling in cash from Minecraft - which is what fueled Scrolls to begin with.

Not only are they rolling in cash from Minecraft, they're rolling in cash from Microsoft as well (which is, of course, because of Minecraft). So, yeah, the "can no longer sustain" line reeks of bullshit to me. Then again, for all that money, they sure didn't seem to spend a dime of it on effective promotion/marketing/etc., based on all the people in the comments under that article saying stuff like "whoa, I'd completely forgotten about this game" or "wow, I never heard of this game before" and such. (This seems to be some kind of trend lately.)

Anyway, it's more likely that since practically nobody cared about Scrolls in the first place, due to poor marketing or whatever, Microsoft is now simply pulling (http://kane-magus.livejournal.com/693243.html) an (http://kane-magus.livejournal.com/660334.html) EA (http://kane-magus.livejournal.com/642647.html) and closing down something that doesn't look like it will be making them maximum money.

But yeah, in the end and in general, this whole thing definitely stinks more of Microsoft meddling than something Mojang itself would have done prior to selling out. At this point, whenever I see any news about "Mojang," I just mentally substitute "Microsoft" for "Mojang," and then the news tends to make a whole lot more sense to me.
