The Great Freebie Music Quest

I'm bored.

So I got to thinking.

You see why I should always be entertained now right?

Anyhow, I wondered how much music was available on the net for free directly from artists for download. And so I started looking around here and there. Not too concerned about the quality of the mp3s (or oggs, etc etc) so long as it's playable. Looking at the stuff I currently have on the harddrive that fit this bill (Stuff by Jonathan Coulton, stuff released on The FuMP, plus a couple that were on Homestar Runner and Symphony X's website) the directory is already 128megs.

I'll pass over samples when I do some further searching. (you know, artists that have 30sec-1min snippets of their songs for free) The songs I downloaded from Symphony X's homepage were full tracks. Quite nice.

I'll place a goal of trying to find 80gigs for the end of 2008. You know, just to show you can fill up an ipod if you really try. ;) I'll update my progress now and then over the year.

Amazon gives out a free mp3 or 2 every week, and they're going to have a promo with Pepsi for free downloads kicking off during the Superbowl.

You know, I would be very interested in seeing if you could do it.

Please chart your progress. And, like come up with a spiffy percentage thermometer or "gigs meter" to illustrate your point. If you can't come up with one, I'll even make one for you!

After some initial browsing, I'm up to 400megs so far. There are some sites I know of that are loaded with free music that I haven't touched yet. I'll go through those next weekend possibly. Getting 80gigs by this time next year should be easily doable.

Another aspect I'm considering is to whether or not allow video game remixes (like those from overclocked-remix). That would probably be about 5-10gigs right there, but I don't really feel like overloading on video game music. That being said, if I find video game soundtracks from developers themselves I'll likely add it. One example is for the fan-made Kings Quest IX game (That's since been renamed to The Silver Lining but Sierra's cool with it I believe).

I'll see about doing some sort of meter etc for progress reporting a bit later. Well, attempt some sort of meter. >_> If it ends up sucking I'll cry about it in later reports. :)
