I don't think it's a secret that the RIAA has turned me into a very anti-RIAA individual with all their bullshit.
So when SellABand.com was part of a slashdot article for finding non-riaa bands, I was intrigued. Take a look through the How It Works page, for both the artists and the "believers". (those who support them.)
In a nutshell it works something like this. Artist signs up, uploads tracks that can be streamed from the site. This attracts Believers. People who are willing to purchase "parts" of the band to help raise the funds needed to get that band into SellABand's studio to record a CD. 5000 parts have to be sold. Each is about 10 dollars (plus applicable transaction fees of course) Believers can buy as many or as few as they want. At any point before an artist reaches the "goal" of 5000 parts sold, a Believer can take their parts out and put it into a different band. It's only when the goal is reached that it becomes non-transferrable. (After all the money is then being used for the CD production!)
When/If the goal is reached, the CD is recorded and two versions are made. A regular CD version and a Limited Edition. There are 5000 Limited Edition copies made. 1 for every part. Of those, each Believer gets 1 delivered to their home for free. If they have more than one part, the rest are sold through their sellaband shop. (This is if I'm reading it properly of course. Read the page yourself to verify!) This essentially becomes a way to get your money back, if those limited editions sell.
The regular edition is also for sale, which is cheaper naturally.
The artist and believers make money on the CD sales (regular and limited) as well as the paid downloads (the downloads are 50 cents each) and a share of the Ad revenue generated by the site based on the traffic and the like.
I signed up for the free downloads mostly (just requires a name and email. fairly painless.) although if my money situation ever improves to the point where I can afford some fiddling with buying "parts", I may go for it.
Currently listening to Soulslide. Similar in nature to Nightwish/Within Temptation/etc. Wish they'd get more support but I guess it's a bit harder to find enough believers for metalish bands.
At any rate I recommend taking a look through it. Listening to the streaming versions doesn't require a signup.
