There are only two real options around here, and I haven't heard problems with the other one as well. Shortly after I hung up the last time (about half an hour) I got a call back from someone else. Apparently the modem -is- correct and the firmware is also correct. The problem was that the port was limited to 1.6Mbps. It was suppose to be opened up for ultra highspeed. It is now going properly - and I presume the person cancelled the tech appointment for monday. If he calls before arriving I'll tell him not to bother. I'll be bringing the third modem down to the mall to the aliant dealer to return since I wasn't given a return bag this time. I'm also going to be contacting the billing dept tomorrow or monday to verify that I am set up for ultra highspeed as I requested. It might be that they have me set up for regular which means the problem originated a lot earlier than presumed.
But yeah. 5 calls to tech and getting 5 different ways to resolve the problem - one attempting to say that there was no problem at all and that I was just too far away from the servers to get maximum speed. I will get to the bottom of where the problem is before christmas. For now tho, full speed ahead.
