OCREMIX

On a more relaxed moment, I realized I have lots of space available on the computer! So I decided to jump on the ocremix torrents. Something I had tried to do years ago but the clients I was using back then didn't seem to enjoy opening torrents that had 500-1000 files inside.

Opened it fine this time, and starting the first 1-1000 batch. (About 3gigs in size!)

Now, I would like to ask a stupid question.

What is the OC Remix?

http://www.ocremix.org/ (http://www.ocremix.org/)

It's basically user-submitted video game theme remixes. Some quite good, some so-so, etc.

OC Remix is awesome. I haven't gotten anything from there for a while myself though, due to lack of HD space, but if and when I eventually get around to getting a bigger drive, I'm going to catch up on the stuff I've missed.

As for quality of remixes, they were rather lax in the early days of the site as I recall, and they allowed stuff back then that they don't allow today. Mere midi-quality remixes, simple instrument swaps, low sample rates, etc. But they kept all the older stuff that they'd previous accepted, regardless, so some of that stuff will still be there anyway.

I now have from 1-1700. Pondering if I should bother with the other minor torrents there. The only advantage to them, I think since I believe they're also included in the 1-1700, is that they have flac versions in there as well.

I really should download those torrents, because I'm sure there are some gems in there that I've missed out on. I tend to stick to only remixes from games that I enjoyed playing (Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Zelda, Sonic, etc) so I've really limited myself.

The remix projects (the FF7 one in particular) often see song-by-song releases on the main site, though not in their entirety.

Also, be sure to look up the OverclockedRemoved tracks. I know there is at least one archive site out there with those songs that have been removed from the site.

Hey everyone, thanks for the kind words on OC ReMix, we appreciate 'em! Just to let you know, we're doing the soundtrack for Capcom's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix! Check it out here: http://digg.com/gaming_news/Fans_go_pro_how_OC_ReMix_put_its_stamp_on_Street_Fighter_II

As for our free torrents (http://www.ocremix.org/torrents/), owsf, GOOD ON YA, that's how you do it! I know korby mentioned that he should check out the OC ReMixes from games he never played, and I couldn't agree with him more. Once you have all of the tracks, you have the opportunity to discover some real gems that you would have never encountered. I wrote about my own experience on my blog: http://www.vgfrequency.com/how-a-russo-nigerian-stallion-found-video-game-music-part-3-discovering-overclocked-remix/

Now that older games are showing up on Virtual Console and other online platforms, one of the cooler side effects of grabbing the OCR torrents is that you might find a really cool theme from an OC ReMix, look into the game it came from, and find a new favorite game just based on the music.

The 10 album torrents feature a lot of tracks that are awesome, even though many were never submitted to OCR, so feel free to grab those. They aren't all included within 1-1700. We also have an 11th album that should be coming out before the end of August, Delta-Q-Delta, tributing Doom II! Our 12th one will be Summoning of Spirits, tributing both Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia, due sometime in the fall!

Also, we have over 100 hours' worth of free music in just the individual ReMixes alone. So even if you hated 2/3rds of it, that's still more than 30 HOURS of free music to enjoy. That sounds pretty awesome if you ask me!

kane_magus, thanks very much for explaining the quality difference in some of the OC ReMixes. Indeed, the acceptance level was a lot lower in the old days when the site was new and djpretzel was just getting the idea off the ground. As we've grown and focused more on what makes a good, interpretive ReMix, the quality of the stuff we post now is much more high-quality and consistent. We respect our history and where we came from by keeping all of our past stuff that stuck to our older standards.

As for any standards violations that were removed, OCR staffer Doulifée hosts most of those on his webspace at "OC ReMoved": http://www.doulifee.com/Storage/OC_Removed/
Info on why those track were removed is here: http://www.ocremix.org/info/ReMix_Changelog

Hopefully that info tells you a little more about the site and why I think you should download everything we have. Hopefully some more of you will take the plunge! Thanks for enjoying OCR, owsf and everyone!
