For those needing more reasons to hate on Square Enix
I'll point you to this article about their digital manga service. You know, where they expect you to pay a subscription and read the manga that's licensed exclusively by them.
Where they massively censor the fuck out of it and...
Somehow manage to add in microtransactions and other video game cesspool tactics.
I wasn't interested in paying a subscription to read manga before this. But a system that goes this far to add in the least desirable traits of the modern video game industry? Hard pass, thanks.

I mean, sure, I remember (semi-)joking in years past about "book DLC" and shit like that, but now they've actually gone and done it?
"On Manga Up!, users have an eight-chapter daily reading limit. By completing chapters, users gain experience points that they can use to read more manga chapters. These experience points are split up into three categories: Up points, XP, and Coin. If users wish to deep-dive into their favorite manga, they’ll either have to accumulate enough points to do so or purchase experience points coins from its shop, which has its own dedicated tab in the app. 'Advance chapters'–i.e., the most recent chapters in a series–can only be read by using XP and Coin. By downloading the app, users get a first time additional 120 XP, which amounts to $.99 USD through Manga Up!’s in-app currency. To make matters worse, single chapters on Manga Up! are split into parts–basically incentivizing readers to purchase coins so they can complete an entire chapter."
What in the actual shitting fuck. Fucking experience points in a manga app. They've turned reading manga into a fucking freemium "game." What the fuck happened to just, you know, buying the manga you want to read through a straightforward, no-nonsense payment, and then just goddamn reading it? Are the empty suits at Squeenix off their meds or something?
Granted, I'd never buy manga to read through an app like this in the first place, even if it were just a straightforward transaction without all of this superfluous tacked on bullshit, so none of this is even remotely relevant to me, but it does indeed give me another opportunity to shit on the idiocy of modern day Square Enix, so that's cool, I guess.
That said, imagine if, say, Amazon implemented some braindead, moronic scheme like this with buying and reading books on Kindle or some shit. Limiting you to only reading eight chapters of a book per day, unless you buy "experience points" or whatever the fuck. That would go over really well, I'm sure. Everyone would absolutely adore it, no doubt.
