Completed this yesterday. I use to play Star Control 2 a little bit long ago on Kobanal's comp back in the early 90's. Ur-Quan Masters is an open-source port of the 3DO version of the game I think. Either way, it works fine on my comp so I've been playing it a bit too much this last week. To help free up some time, I finally grabbed a FAQ. ^^;

I had already pieced together half of what needed to be done to solve the game anyway.

If so, you can still play Ur-quan Masters. The text is skippable on that. After re-reading the website I link, what happened was the original developers released the partially ported source for the 3DO under the GPL and it went from there. So I'm guessing if it was originally unskippable, it was changed. :)

But you're right, just exploring stuff was awesome. For a while there I was even cataloging the planets nearest Sol for finding the best locations of life and minerals for future runs through the game. Mostly to make sure I could get my starship up and running asap.

Did they ever explain the rainbow worlds? Them and the melnorme trader were the two big mysteries they left dangling.

I have a copy of Star Control 3 kicking around here somewhere, but it just didn't live up to the high standards set by Star Control II. :( I have no clue if they tried to explain some of those mysteries in it or not. (Including the fate of the species that went coreward..)

In Star Control 2, there isn't much to them. It hints that they're arrangement is important to explain the disappearance of the precursors. Basically if you connect the dots between them, it'd form an arrow pointing towards the galactic core. Which is where Star Control 3 takes place. Essentially it's just a lure for the sequel.
